After 4 years, the music reality show Indian Idol finally got its 1st female winner in the form of  Sourabhee Debbarma, who won the grand finale of the fourth season of the TV programme on Sunday night.

Sourabhee, who hails from the India’s north eas, belted out popular numbers confidently and pipped the other finalists – Bengali girl Torsha Sarkar and army man Kapil Thapa. She walked away with a Rs 10 million contract with Sony TV and a car.

The result was based on public voting. The special attractions of the event were Bollywood stars John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh, who had come to promote their forthcoming film New York.

Others from the Indian film and music industry, including judges Javed Akhtar, Anu Malik, Kailash Kher and Sonali Bendre, too were present to cheer the finalists.

The 22 year old winner is petite, charismatic and adds glamour to her stage perfomances with her perfect moves – a plus point she has had since the beginning of the show. However, the girl has had no professionl training in music.

She recently met veteran Assamese composer Bhupen Hazarika who told her “my blessings are with you.”

Meet Dr A R RahmanHonorary doctorates are usually conferred on politicians and film stars – a pratice that’s often come in for critisism. Now this degree will be conferred upon a musician for the soothing and healing touch his music provides.

Chennai’s Oscar winner will soon be called Dr.A.R.Rahman! Anna University will confer the doctorate on the Mozart of Madras in Media Sciences.

“It’s a great honour. I can now treat people”, was Rahman’s first response to this honour.

“He has made us all proud. Reason enough for us to bestow this honour on him”, says Dr P Mannar Jawahar, Vice Chancellor , Anna University.

According to Surjit Singh Barnala, Governor, Tamil Nadu, “He is from Chennai. He’s our Rahman. That’s why all this celebration.”

There is more on the Aamir-SRK front. After the succes of Ghajini, grapevine has it that Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has decidedto work with director A.R.Murugadoss.

While there isn’t any clear indication about who approached who, sources at SRK’s production company, Red Chillies Entertainment say that the two are indded in talks for Murugadoss’s next film.

According to reports, the role that Murugadoss has now reserved for SRK, was actually meant for the star of the original Ghajini, Surya Sivakumar.

It seems Murugadoss has put his plans of returning to Tamil cinema on hold as the biggest Bollywood superstars make a beeline for him.

Animated comedy The Simpsons is to become the longest running prime time series in US TV history after makers Fox ordered another two seasons.

The show is currently in its 20th season which matches the record of Western drama Gunsmoke, shown on CBS, which ended in 1975.

The 21st season will begin in the autumn with the 22nd airing next year.

The Simpsons was 1st shown in December 1989, and made its UK debut on Sky in September 1990.

The new commission of 44 episodes over two seasons will bring the total number of shows to 493.

The popular carton, featuring Bart, Homer, Marge and other residents of Springfield, has received 24 Emmy awards in its 20 on screen.

Next month, a new episode of The Simpsons is to have its premiere in the UK for the 1st time in the show’s history.

New episodes are usually shown in the US on Fox a week before being shown on Sky 1 in the UK.

In The Name Of The Grandfather, a St Patrick’s Day special which details a family holiday to Ireland, will be shown on Sky1 on 17 March.
