The ‘Mozart of Madras’ has done it again. A.R Rahman reached an exceptional milestone at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards winning two Grammys for his music from Oscar Award winning film ‘Slumdog Millionaire.’

Rahman who was nominated for two gramophones for his Slumdog Millionaire score in the Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media and Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media categories (Jai ho) walked away with the awards during the pre show event.

‘This is insane, god is great again,’ Rahman said as he accepted his second award.

The song, ‘Jai Ho’ was sung by Sukhvinder Singh, Tanvi Shah, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Vijay Prakash and Rahman himself. This is the first time Rahman has been nominated for a Grammy.

He joins other Indian music greats like Pandit Ravi Shankar, Zakir Jussain, Vikku Vinayak and Vishvamohan Bhatt who have won a Grammy in the past.

Rahman’s took on Steve Jordan for ‘Cadillac Records,’ Quentin Tarantino for ‘Inglourious Basterds’, and the producers of ‘Twilight’ and ‘True Blood’ in the soundtrack category.

In the best song category Rahman’s beaten rivals included Bruce Springsteen for his song ‘The Wrestler’, from the Oscar-nominated flick ‘The Wrestler’.

The Grammy success comes after Rahman earned two Oscars for his music in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ at last year’s Academy Awards.

Director Danny Boyle has returned to his home town in Greater Manchester to show off his Oscar.

The 52 year old arrived to gathered crowds outside St Mary’s Social Club in Radcliffe, Bury, where his family and supporters watched the ceremony.

The film Slumdog Millionaire won eight Oscars, including Boyle’s best director award and the best picture prize.

Boyle mentioned the club in his acceptance speech and said lacals were “very proud” of his success.

He is now being considered for the honour of Freeman of the Borough of Bury, by the local council.

Boyle kept to a promise to mention the club, where his father Frank is a regular, if he won the Oscar.

He said he took his Golden Globe and Bafta prizes to the club a few weeks ago.

“the first thing anyone said to me here was, ‘How did someone like you win a Bafta?’ and that’s exactly the sort of thing you need saying”, he said.

“They are very proud and it’s a lovely environment”.

Boyle said he drank lemonade at the club when he was a child. His father used to run the club.

“He used to get up and sing, ‘Oh Danny Boyle’, which was pretty embarrassing when you’re 11 year old”, he said.

Boyle said music was one of his biggest influences. He said Burry band elbow, which is also being considered for a Freeman honour, was among his favourites.

Albert Waters, chairman of St Mary’s Social Club, said: “I think it’s superb.

“He’s done something no one else around here has ever done.

“I think he deserves some sort of award for his achievements”.

Boyle also directed the films Shallow Grave, Trainspotting and The Beach.

Slumdog Millionaire‘s Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle’s father has praised A R Rahman’s music in the movie, but is not too enthused about the film and dismissed it as just “reasonable”.

Based in Radcliffe in Greater Manchester, 88-year-old Frank Boyle stayed up all night with family and friends

watching his son’s glory at the Oscars, but did not go over the top in his praise for the film.

Slumdog Millionaire won eight Oscars awards with two going to music maestro A R Rahman.

He said: “I think it’s reasonable. He is not making films for me. He is making them for younger film goers so I won’t say anything more about it. I really liked the music I thought it was wonderful.

“I always knew that Danny would be successful but I never thought he would be the number one director in the world. He has always been interested in films. He got into it when he was a boy”.

But Boyle’s twin sister, Maria, is delighted by her brother’s success. She told The Daily Telegraph: “It was a tremendous night at the Oscars, we’ve not spoken to him yet although we sent a text. We did speak to him yesterday afternoon and the kids were in a limo on the way to the ceremony. It was fantastic to see him up there and great that he spoke about us because he had a lot of people to thank. I can’t believe he referred to Radcliffe.”
